Carl Orff (Munich 1895-1982) premiered the hugely popular work Carmina Burana in 1937. It was based on a collection of Goliardic songs (written by priests of irregular lives) from the 12th and 13th centuries, preserved in a codex found in Bavaria (Germany). These poems, written in Latin, French, and German, celebrate love, gambling, and, above all, wine, and satirize social and ecclesiastical classes. The music, written by Orff in the 20th century amidst the madness of the Nazi regime, is structured as a scenic cantata. In addition to the orchestra and chorus, it features soloists (soprano, tenor, baritone), with a particularly rich and splendid percussion section. In the version we will hear today, arranged by the composer himself, the orchestra has been replaced by two pianos, while all other elements of the original work remain the same. Euroclassics has organized more than 30 performances of Carmina Burana in Mallorca at various venues, with an audience of over eleven thousand people. With 90 musicians on stage!
